2. Devil’s Island, French Guiana

Between the period of 1852 and 1946, this island was treated as a colony for the French convicts. Reportedly, it used to provide shelter to some 80000 prisoners before it got closed down in 1952. The prisoners used to live under in-human conditions, with majority of them dying there. Each year, around 50000 tourists visits the place.

3. Western Wall, Jerusalem

According to Judaism, this is the holiest place of all and one of Israel’s top tourist destinations. The wall is built next to the holy complex, which in 1967, was taken over by Israel. Actually, East Jerusalem is where the wall is located.

4. A-bomb Dome, Hiroshima

This is the site where America dropped an atom bomb during the Second World War that almost eradicated the city. This dome is what’s remained of the Industrial Promotional Hall. It is now regarded as a famous and historic landmark, serving as a memorial. It is also among the most infamous tourist destinations in the world.

5. Potala Palace, Lhasa, Tibet

The Potala palace was used as the main residence for the Dalai Lama until the 14th Dalai Lama fled to India because of the 1959 Tibetan uprising. Tibetan Buddhists considered it to be sacred in the past, but now it is run by China as a museum.

6. The World Trade Center site, New York City

Probably the most infamous site in modern history, this is the place where the World Trade Center’s two towers used to stand, before terrorists attacked and destroyed them in 2001. Now it attracts thousands of visitors every day. It has become a part of the most infamous tourist destinations and stands as a place for a visit when in New York.

The tourism industry of this slum soared with the release of the Danny Boyle’s movie Slumdog Millionaire. This slum is believed to have a population of close to million people and is regarded to be Asia’s largest.

This place has gone down in history as the site of the world’s worst nuclear disasters. The nuclear reactor is a major tourist attraction and visited by a large number of people throughout the year.

9. Cu Chi tunnels, Vietnam

These tunnels are located near the city of Ho Chi Minh and during the war these were navigated by the Viet Cong guerrillas to frustrate their enemies. Some of these tunnels are opened to the public, so as to educate them about the war.

10. Tiananmen Square, Beijing

This is the world’s largest city square and is situated beside the Forbidden City. The site has gone down in history books as in the year 1989, the government killed around 400 students here. It is now one of the most infamous tourist destinations in the world.
